- Welcome to Ameol2!
-
- Ameol2 is an all-in-one off-line reader for your internet news, mail and
- CIX Conferencing messages. As it is an off-line reader you can read and
- compose messages without being connected to your service provider or on-line
- service, so saving time and money. Ameol2 can be used with an internet
- account to read usenet news and mail and also to read CIX Conferencing
- messages.
-
- This is a brief tutorial for people who are new to off-line readers and
- will help you get started. For more detailed instructions and help please
- see the Ameol2 help file by selecting the Help menu, Contents item (in
- short form, Help|Contents).
-
- Each news, mail and CIX Conferencing message is displayed on your screen
- individually, just like the message you are reading now. To go to the next
- message, press the Return key.
-
- Press Return now.

- Read and Unread messages
-
- This is the second message which you probably reached by pressing Return
- after reading message number 1. Ameol2 keeps track of the messages you
- have read and those you haven't yet read and displays this information in
- the Thread Window. The Thread Window is above the status bar (the line
- that has the date, time and other message information on it) and you can
- see there is a letterbox icon next to message 2 - this shows that Ameol2
- knows this message hasn't been read yet. If you look up to message 1 you
- will see there is no letterbox icon next to it - Ameol2 knows that you
- have read that message.
-
- Press Return to go to the next message.

- Moving up and down messages
-
- If a message is quite long and can not fit in the message viewer window
- (the window you are reading this message in now) then scroll bars will be
- displayed on the right hand side of the window. To carry on reading more
- of the message that isn't currently in view, press the Page Down key.
-
- Press the Page Down key now.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Press Page Down again
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- This is the bottom of the message which you reached by pressing the
- Page Down Key. If you want to scroll back up again press the Page Up key
- until you see the beginning of the message. You can also re-size the
- message window so you can see more of a message without using the page up
- and page down keys. To do this just move your mouse pointer over any edge
- of the window until the pointer changes to one with an arrow at each end.
- Then holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse and you will see
- the window change size. Let go of the mouse button when the window is the
- size you want it to be. This method works for nearly all Ameol2 windows.
-
- This is the end of this message - press Return to go to the next message.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Welcome 4 ameol@cix.co.uk(497)1Jul99 08:00
- Going to a previous message
-
- If you want to go back to the last message to you read for another look
- at it just press the Backspace key. This will always take you to the last
- message you read. Try it now, Ameol will go back to message 3. Press
- Return to come back to this message.
-
- Back again?
-
- The Backspace key can be used many times in succession, so if you want to
- go back to a message you read five messages ago, you would press
- Backspace five times.
-
- Press Return to go to the next message.

- Threading
-
- Ameol2 is a threaded message reader. This means that when people reply to
- mail (or follow-up to a usenet message, or comment to a CIX Conferencing
- message) Ameol2 will show you that the second message is related to the
- first one. For example, the message you are reading now is a comment to
- message number 4. This is shown in two ways
-
- - the status bar says "Comment to message 4"
- - in the graphical Thread Window
-
- The Thread Window shows you the message number, author and the first line
- of the message. It also has a graphic display of the threads - message 4
- (which is called a "Root message" as it is not a comment to any other
- message) is displayed in bold type and has a brown folder icon next to
- it. The current message (message 5, which you are reading now) is
- displayed in normal type.
-
- Usenet and CIX Conferencing conference messages threads can be very
- complicated, the graphical thread window lets you see at a glance which
- message is a comment to which other message. Occasionally you will see a
- message in the thread window that is in bold type but which has two dots
- on the left of it, like this:
-
- .. 187 sp I posted a message yesterday.
-
- This means the message is a comment but you do not have the original
- message in your database.
-
-
- Remember to press Return to go to the next message.

- The In Basket
-
- On the left hand side of the Ameol2 window you can see a window that is
- titled "In Basket" (if you cannot see this window select the View menu
- and choose the In Basket item). The In Basket lists all the newsgroups
- you have read in Ameol2, any mail folders or topics you have created and
- any CIX conferences or topics you have read in Ameol2.
-
- If this is the first time you have used Ameol2 you will probably only
- have a few News and Mail folders, plus the current folder (that contains
- the messages you are reading now). The current folder is highlighted in
- the In Basket and as you change topics by reading messages the highlight
- also moves to show you which topic you are in.
-
- Lets try moving to another folder. Make a note of the current highlighted
- topic, then double-click on the Mail/Messages folder. You will be in the
- Messages topic of the Mail folder (the topic itself will probably be
- empty). To come back to this topic double-click the name that you noted
- down earlier, in the In Basket.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Welcome 7 ameol@cix.co.uk(1489)1Jul99 08:00
- Creating messages
-
- Let's create our first message.
-
- Select Mail|New Message. A New Mail Message window will open, re-size it
- so you can still see this message using the window re-size method
- described earlier. The Mail Message window has a number of boxes, but you
- don't have to fill all of them in.
-
- In the box next to To: type in your own e-mail address. If you are not
- sure what this is, copy the e-mail address in the Reply-To field to the
- To: box.
-
- In the box next to Subject: type "Test E-mail".
-
- Then type anything you like in the lower blank area (this is called an
- Edit Window). When you have finished typing your message press the Save
- key. You have now created your first e-mail message! However as Ameol2 is
- an off-line reader your message has not been sent yet, it will be sent
- when you next connect to your internet provider or to CIX Conferencing.
- This means you can perform many different actions on the message before it
- is sent, this is done from the Out Basket and it is this that we will
- cover in the next message.
-
- You can create new News and CIX Conferencing messages by selecting
- News|Post Article and Message|Say respectively. To make a Comment to a
- message select Mail|Reply to Message, News|Follow Up Article or
- Message|Comment depending on whether the message is a Mail, News or
- CIX Conferencing message. You should always use the Comment command when
- you are replying to a message by someone else so everyone can see that
- the two messages relate to each other.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Welcome 8 ameol@cix.co.uk(1143)1Jul99 08:00
- The Out Basket
-
- To open the Out Basket, select View|Out Basket.
-
- The Out Basket is the storage area for any messages you post, any file
- downloads or uploads you decide to do.. in fact any actions relating to
- files or messages that you do within Ameol2. While an item is in the Out
- Basket you can review it, edit it, delete it, Keep it (so it is executed
- every time you connect) or Hold it (so it stays in the Out Basket but is
- not executed).
-
- If you followed the method above for creating a new mail message then
- that message will be in your Out Basket now. You can edit it by
- highlighting the message in the Out Basket and clicking the Edit button
- on the Out Basket window (not the Edit menu at the top of the Ameol2
- window). You will see your mail message open in an editor again - here
- you can change any of the details you entered before. You can change the
- text of the message, the Subject: or who the message was addressed To:.
- When you have finished editing the message, click Save again and your
- newly edited message will return to the Out Basket. It will stay there
- until you connect to your internet provider or to CIX Conferencing.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Welcome 9 ameol@cix.co.uk(1156)1Jul99 08:00
- Connecting
-
- Connecting ("Blinking") with Ameol2 is very simple. To connect to either
- your internet provider or to CIX Conferencing just click the Blink button
- on the toolbar (on the left with the telephone picture) or select File|Connect -
- Full. If you have set up your internet software (such as Trumpet Winsock,
- Windows95 Dial-Up Networking or WindowsNT RAS) correctly then that
- software will dial up your internet company and make a connection. If you
- are dialling direct to CIX Conferencing only then Ameol2 itself will dial
- for you.
-
- Ameol2 will then send any e-mail, news and CIX Conferencing messages that
- were in your Out Basket, then collect any new messages waiting for you.
- At the end of the blink Ameol2 will disconnect or tell your internet
- software that it can disconnect.
-
- If you normally need to start your internet dialer before starting an
- internet application such as Netscape then you will also need to start it
- before asking Ameol2 to connect.
-
- If you do not have any internet software, or if it does not start to dial
- when you click on the Blink toolbar button please contact the Support
- Department of your internet service provider.

- Support for Ameol2 - what help is available?
-
- If you have a problem or question about Ameol2 there are various
- resources which may help.
-
- 1. _The Help file_
-
- Ameol2 has a full online Help file. Most dialogs include a Help button
- which when selected will load the Help file at the correct place. Many of
- the Help pages are "hotspot" images, which means you can click on the
- Help page to see more information about the dialog.
-
- You can also search the Help file by selecting Help|Search for Help on..
- within Ameol2. Enter the word or phrase that you wish to get help with
- and the nearest match(es) in the Ameol2 Help file will be displayed.
-
- If you select the Help file contents page (Help|Contents within Ameol2)
- you will have access to these sections of the Help file:
-
- Reading Messages
- Writing Messages
- Connecting
- Settings
- Reference
- Ameol v2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Glossary
-
- 2. _The Tutorials folder_
-
- .. which is where you are reading this message. The other Tutorial topics
- have useful information about rules, changes from Ameolv1, and using
- usenet. There is also a copy of the readme (which was offered for your
- perusal during installation) in the Readme topic.
-
- 3. _CIX Conferences_
-
- Online support for Ameol2 is mainly done via the CIX conference system.
- The conference for Ameol2 support is called ameol.support, and you can
- join this conference on your next connection by clicking this conference
- link -> cix:ameol.support. You may find that someone else has already
- asked the question you want to ask and it has been answered in the
- cix:ameol.support/faq topic.
-
- Support in the ameol.support conferences is performed by the Ameol
- Moderators. This is a small team of people who are not employed by CIX
- but have a wide knowledge of Ameol2, CIX and the internet. They also have
- access to the Ameol Development team in case there are any questions they
- are unable to answer. Ameol Moderators can be identified by the (Ameol
- moderator) line at the end of their messages.
-
- Support for the CIX system itself is performed by CIX staff in the
- cix.support conference - click here -> cix:cix.support to join the
- conference.
-
- If none of these resources has helped answer your support question CIX
- offers various methods of obtaining support. These methods are described
- in the next message.
-
-
- >>>Tutorials/Support 2 ameol@cix.co.uk(3212)1Jul99 08:00
- Support for Ameol2 - how to get support
-
- CIX offers support for Ameol2 in a variety of ways.
-
- *The first three methods are available to CIX members only.*
- *If you are not a CIX member please see option 4.*
-
- 1. _Via CIX conferences_
-
- This is the preferred method. Select Help|Submit Report, choose the
- nature and importance of the message, fill in the title then enter your
- message. Details of the versions of Ameol2 and Windows you are using will
- be included automatically. Click on Save and the report will be saved in
- your out basket. When you next connect your message will be posted to the
- appropriate conference and will be answered by one of the Ameol
- Moderators or possibly by another conference member. Select View|Next
- Unread Priority to see your message and any replies to it. It may be up
- to 24 hours before you have a reply (though it is usually much faster)
- and there is no need to post "reminder" messages - all messages will be
- answered.
-
-
- 2. _Via email_
-
- CIX has an email address for all support questions - support@cix.co.uk.
- To send an email to the support department select Mail|New Message, enter
- support@cix.co.uk in the To: box, enter a subject, then type your
- message. Please remember to include details of the version of Ameol2 you
- are using (use Help|About Ameol2 to find this out), your operating system
- (Windows 3.x, Windows95, WindowsNT 3, WindowsNT 4, or something else) and
- a precise description of the problem, including any steps to reproduce if
- appropriate. When you have finished your message click the Save button.
- The message will be mailed to the support department when you next
- connect.
-
- Only support questions should be mailed to support@cix.co.uk - if you
- have a general question about CIX services or a billing query contact
- admin@cix.co.uk.
-
- If you are not a CIX member and wish to receive the CIX Sign Up pack
- (including a guide to CIX and the Internet, the latest version of Ameol2
- and Internet Explorer on CD) please mail your name and address to
- brochure@cix.co.uk.
-
-
- 3. _Via telephone_
-
- CIX operates a telephone support line (for CIX members ONLY) with
- questions or problems relating to CIX services or Ameol2. Call
- *020 8255 5151* (London) or *0845 355 5151* (U.K. local call nationwide).
- Outside of the U.K. call *+44 20 8255 5151.*
-
- This number should be used for support questions only. If you have a
- general question about CIX services or a billing query contact the CIX
- Administration department on 020 8255 5000.
-
-
- 4. Via email for users who are not CIX members
-
- Users who have installed Ameol2 for Internet Only usage can also use the
- Report utility but the message produced will automatically be emailed to
- a special non-member address.
-
- Select Help|Submit Report, choose the nature and importance of the
- message, fill in the title then enter your message. Details of the
- versions of Ameol2 and Windows you are using will be included
- automatically. Click on Save and the report will be saved in your out
- basket. When you next connect your message will be sent via email. While
- CIX will support non-CIX users of Ameol2 as best as it can, the needs of
- CIX users will always come first so at times responses may be delayed or
- produced by an auto-responder.

-
- DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING AMEOL2
- =================================
- There are two versions of Ameol; a 16-bit version for Windows
- 3.1, 3.11 and 3.11 for WorkGroups, and a 32-bit version for Windows NT
- 3.50 or later, or Windows 95. You can install and run the 16-bit version
- under Windows NT or Windows 95, but you cannot install or run the
- 32-bit version under Windows 3. Windows 3.x users with WIN32S
- must use the 16-bit version as WIN32S does not support comms.
-
- The setup file is a Windows installation executable. Run it from within
- Windows and follow the instructions.
-
- Users of Ameol v1.xx - Please don't install Ameol v2 into the same
- directory as Ameol. The installer will not allow you to do this, but
- please don't try it anyway. There is a facility to import your Ameol v1
- database if you want to, this will start automatically the first time
- you start Ameol v2 if Ameol2 can detect your Ameol v1 database. If it
- does not start automatically you can run it by selecting
- File|Import|Ameol Import Wizard.
-
-
- SUBMITTING REPORTS
- ==================
- Choose Submit Report from the Help menu to submit any reports or

-
- USING AMEOL ADDONS
- ==================
- All Ameol addons should work fine with Ameol v2 (excluding those
- mentioned below which have specific problems). If in doubt or you are
- experiencing problems, please contact the author of the addon directly.
- It is our intention that all existing Ameol addons work directly under
- Ameol v2 with no changes. Those which will not work should only
- require minor modifications to allow them to work properly.
-
- To install an addon under Ameol v2, use the Install Addons command on
- the Settings menu.
-
- The following is a list of addons which have known problems.
-
- Questionnaire
- -------------
- This will not run under Ameol v2.
-
- Report
- ------
- The Report addon is now built into Ameol v2. You should not attempt
- to install the old Ameol report addon or a conflict will occur.
-
- Get Missing Messages
- --------------------
- Version 3.01 of GETMM incorrectly adds two 'Get Misc Msgs' commands to
- the end of the Folder menu. This cosmetic bug is corrected in version
- 3.03 which is in beta test.
-
- Thread Manager
- --------------
- The functionality of this addon is now integrated within Ameol v2 and
- is no longer required. The author recommends that you do not use this
- addon with Ameol v2.
-
- Immediate Message Deletion
- --------------------------
- The functionality of the IDEL addon is now integrated within Ameol v2
- and is no longer required. However it will continue to work with Ameol
- v2.
-
- Acronyms
- --------
- Ameol v2 provides its own ROT13 capability on the Edit menu. The
- Acronym addon is still required for the decoding of acronyms.
-
- Gallery
- -------
- Ameol v2 provides a simple mugshot viewer without support for sounds
- or the more sophisticated features of Gallery. If you wish to use Gallery
- instead then disable mugshots in Ameol v2 as follows:
-
- 1. Choose Preferences from the Settings menu.
- 2. Click the Viewer tab.
- 3. Uncheck the 'Show authors mugshot when message is displayed'
- option.
- 4. Click OK to close the dialog.
-
- Note that the current version of Gallery does not use the MUGSHOT.INI
- file created and maintained by Ameol v2.
-
- Show Conference Information
- ---------------------------
- SHOWCONF v2.03 will crash if you have a conferencing folder name longer
- than 14 characters in your In Basket. This is not necessarily a bug with
- the addon which was designed only to work with CIX conferences names
- which are limited to a maximum of 14 characters.
-
- File Find Manager
- -----------------
- Because FFIND v1.02 relied on a undocumented window class not supported
- in Ameol v2, it is unable to display the Tabs along the top of the
- window. FFIND v1.03 is available now from ameol.support/files.
-
- General File Editor
- -------------------
- AMEDIT v1.02 will not work if the In Basket window is not open. A newer
- version, v1.03, is now available from the ameol.support/files conference.

-
- COMPATIBILITY WITH AMEOL
- ========================
- This section explains some areas in which Ameol v2 is compatible
- with Ameol. Please read this section after installing Ameol v2 for the
- first time.
-
- Keystrokes
- ----------
- Where possible, we have tried to keep the keystrokes used by Ameol v2
- identical to those used in Ameol. This includes Ctrl+T to initiate a
- blink, Ctrl+E to open the Export dialog and so on.
-
- You can easily customise the keystrokes from the Customise dialog
- in the Settings menu.
-
- Ameol Configuration
- -------------------
- The 16-bit version of Ameol v2 does not use a configuration file in
- your Windows directory. Rather it stores the configuration file in the
- USERS subdirectory. Within that subdirectory are further subdirectories
- for each user. By default, Ameol v2 creates a user called
- Administrator and stores the settings in the ADMIN.INI file in the
- USERS\ADMIN subdirectory.
-
- The format of this file is similar to AMEOL.INI, but is not the
- same. Do NOT attempt to migrate your Ameol configuration to Ameol v2
- by copying over your AMEOL.INI file. It will not work.
-
- The 32-bit version of Ameol v2 stores configuration in the registry.
- Two registry locations are used:
-
- Registry Location Purpose
- ================= =======
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CIX\Ameol2 Local machine (global)
- information is stored
- here. This includes your
- username and site
- details entered during
- installation, and a list
- of Import and Export
- filters.
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CIX\Ameol2 Settings local to each
- user are stored here. All
- configuration details are
- local to each user
- both within Windows NT
- and Windows 95, and for
- each account set up
- under Ameol v2.
-
- There is no provision for multiple message databases in Ameol v2.
-
-
- KNOWN PROBLEMS AND WORKAROUNDS
- ==============================
- There are a few known problems with Ameol v2 which we were unable to
- fix before release. A fix for these should appear in the near future.
- Keep your eye on the ameolnews conference for an announcement of a free
- upgrade.
-
- Aborted downloads when using TAPI (Telephony Modem)
- ---------------------------------------------------
- CIX displays the contents of a downloaded file in the terminal
- screen then reports "Download aborted". To cure this select
- Settings|Communications, select the blink type you are using to
- connect. Click Edit and change Dial Up Conferencing (Win95/NT) to
- Dial Up Conferencing (Ameol).
-
- Pause then disconnection under Windows95/NT
- -------------------------------------------
- Using Dial Up Conferencing (Win95/NT) under Windows95 or NT, you
- connect to CIX but nothing happens for a minute or so, then Ameol
- v2 disconnects.
- Open the file ameol2\script\connect.scr in a file editor such as
- notepad. Directly after the "pause 1000" line, enter
-
- put ""
-
- Save the file and Ameol v2 will connect correctly.
-
-
- End of readme.

- Differences Between Ameol and Ameol2
-
- Ameol2 is not an simple update of Ameol, but a different product entirely.
- However there are many aspects of Ameol2 that are similar to Ameol. This
- topic describes the main differences for the benefit of users moving to
- Ameol2 from Ameol.

- The Ameol2 Workspace
-
- In Ameol, the workspace was made up of two default windows: the Out Basket
- window and the Conference List window. Both of these were permanent windows
- in the sense that they could not be closed. All you could do was to shrink
- them to an icon at the bottom of the workspace.
-
- Under Ameol2, the Conference List window has been renamed to the In Basket
- and that, along with the Out Basket, can be closed leaving a clear
- workspace with no windows open.
-
- To re-open the In Basket and Out Basket, choose the respective commands from
- the View menu.
-
- Ameol2 remembers the position and size of all windows. It also remembers
- when the In Basket, Out Basket, message window and Scheduler window were
- open when you close Ameol2 and re-opens those windows in their last size
- and position when Ameol2 is restarted. The message window also remembers
- which conference and topic were last shown.
-
- Ameol2 also hides the scroll bars that appear at the edge of the workspace
- when you move a window partially outside the workspace. You can alter this
- behaviour using the "Show scroll bars in the workspace window" option,
- available from Settings|Preferences|Viewer.
-

- The Message Window
-
- The message window, which shows the threads and body of messages, is now
- divided into three panes instead of two. The third pane, the folder pane,
- appears in the upper left corner of the message window and is a smaller
- version of the In Basket. It provides a quick way to move between topics
- without having to return to the In Basket.
-
- If you wish to hide the folder pane, click on the vertical separator that
- divides it from the thread pane and drag the separator all the way to the
- left. Alternatively, double-click the separator. When you first install
- Ameol2 the third pane is hidden.
-
- The message pane now shows quoted text in a different colour to the rest of
- the message. This makes reading replies much easier, especially in Usenet
- articles.
-
- Finally the message pane can now display messages much larger than permitted
- under Ameol. Whereas Ameol would show 'Message too large to display' for large
- messages, the messages now display in their entirety under Ameol2.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Changes 4 ameol@cix.co.uk(1353)1Jul99 08:00
- The Thread Pane
-
- The thread pane is the list of messages in a topic. This appears above the
- message itself, separated by the divider bar.
-
- The thread pane now supports multiple message selection. You can now
- select more than one message and choose a command from the Message menu to
- apply to all selected messages. Not all commands work on multiple messages.
- Only the most recently selected message is displayed in the message pane.
-
- You can now move or copy messages to other topics by dragging them from the
- thread pane to the destination topic in either in the In Basket or the mini
- in basket if it is visible. Hold down the Ctrl key to copy messages,
- otherwise the messages are MOVED to the destination topic.
-
- The columns in the thread pane are now configurable. Choose Sorted By from
- the View menu to set the sort order for the thread pane. The sort order is
- on a per-topic basis, so it will reset to References order when you move to
- another topic.
-
- You can also specify which columns to display in the thread pane. Choose from
- the message number, the name of the poster, the date when the message was
- posted, the size of the message and the subject. Choose Show Columns from
- the View menu to hide or show individual columns. The columns are shown on
- a per topic basis.
-
- HINT: Click on the headers above the thread pane to quick sort the column.

- Communications
-
- Under Ameol, you would use the Communications command in the Settings menu
- to set up your modem, phone numbers and telnet settings. You could only set
- Ameol to use either dial-up (connecting directly to CIX Conferencing) or
- telnet via your Internet Service Provider (ISP), but not both.
-
- Ameol2 provides a greater deal of flexibility with setting up Communications.
- The Communications dialog in the Settings menu not only shows the different
- communication options (Dial Up Conferencing (Win95/NT) [aka TAPI], Dial Up
- Conferencing (Ameol) [aka "Ameol comms"] and Net Access/Internet Conferencing
- [aka Telnet]), but also allows you to create other custom options.
-
- You can also create multiple Custom Connect blink entries. Under Ameol, you
- only had one Custom Connect command. Under Ameol2, you can create multiple
- Custom Connect commands, give them individual names and even assign them
- their own keystrokes and place them on the toolbar!
-
- Finally, Ameol2 supports Dial-Up Networking (also called DUN, RAS, or Remote
- Access Service). If you are accessing CIX Conferencing via your ISP, Ameol2
- can be asked to use RAS to dial up your ISP, automatically log on with a script,
- connect to CIX Conferencing and then disconnect from your ISP afterwards.

- Purging
-
- In Ameol2, you can now purge selected folders or topics by selecting them from the
- In Basket and clicking the right mouse button. This brings up a popup menu. Choose
- Purge from the menu and you will asked whether or not to purge the selected folder.
-
- To do a Global Purge, select the database (click the first item in the In Basket)
- and choose Purge from the popup menu.
-
- The Ameol1 Compact option has been built into the Ameol2 Purge function.

- Check And Repair
-
- The Check and Repair command in Ameol has been renamed to Check in Ameol2 and appears
- in the Folder menu. You can now check individual folders and topics as well as the
- entire messagebase.
-
- To check an individual folder or topic, select it from the In Basket and click the
- right mouse button. This brings up a popup menu. Choose Check from the menu and the
- Check dialog will appear.
-
- You can also Check a folder by choosing the Check... button in the Statistics page of
- the folder properties.
-

- The Utilities Menu
-
- When you install addons into Ameol2, the addon will now insert extra commands onto
- the menu bar. Ameol2 no longer places the addon under an Utilities menu.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 1 ameol@cix.co.uk(393)1Jul99 08:00
- Introduction to Rules
-
- Ameol2 provides a powerful rules engine that allows you to
- mark or move messages as they are being imported.
-
- For example, you can set up a rule so that all mail messages from
- a certain person is moved to another mailbox. You could set up a
- rule so that messages from another person are automatically
- deleted.
-
- Rules work on topics, folders or even the entire database.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 2 ameol@cix.co.uk(985)1Jul99 08:00
- Redirecting Incoming Mail From a User
-
- Ameol2 provides a quick way to create a rule that directs mail
- from a certain person to another folder.
-
- 1. Locate an e-mail from that person.
- 2. Choose the Sort Mail From command from the Mail menu, or press 'Q'.
- 3. You can either sort the mail into an existing mailbox or create a
- new mailbox and sort the mail into that. Choose the appropriate
- option.
- 4. Disable the 'Move other messages from this user to the specified
- folder' checkbox if you only want to move this one mail message. If
- this option is left checked, Ameol2 will scan back through the whole
- mail mailbox looking for other e-mail from the user and move them to
- the new mailbox.
- 5. Click OK to move the e-mail.
-
- Once you have completed this command, all subsequent e-mail from this
- user will be redirected to the new mailbox. To have a look at the rule
- that was created, choose Rules from the Settings menu and click the
- Edit button in the Rule Manager dialog.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 3 ameol@cix.co.uk(1416)1Jul99 08:00
- Redirecting Incoming Mail To an Account
-
- Because Ameol2 uses the POP3 protocol for retrieving mail across the
- internet, you can set up many different account names under your POP3
- domain. For example, if your domain name is:
-
- example.cix.co.uk
-
- you can set up accounts such as:
-
- personal@example.cix.co.uk
- fromjane@example.cix.co.uk
- postmaster@example.cix.co.uk
-
- By default, mail to any of the above e-mail addresses will go into the
- Messages mailbox. To redirect them to individual mailboxes based on the
- account name, follow the steps below:
-
- 1. Locate an e-mail to the account you want to redirect.
- 2. Choose the Sort Mail To command from the Mail menu.
- mail mailbox looking for other e-mail to that account and move them to
- the new mailbox.
- 5. Click OK to move the e-mail.
-
- Once you have completed this command, all subsequent e-mail to this
- account will be redirected to the new mailbox. To have a look at the rule
- that was created, choose Rules from the Settings menu and click the
- Edit button in the Rule Manager dialog.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 4 ameol@cix.co.uk(766)1Jul99 08:00
- Using Rules To Delete Messages From A User
-
- If you want to delete messages from a particular user in a particular
- conference:
-
- 1. Choose Rules from the Settings menu.
- 2. Select the conference from the list of folders in the Rules Manager
- dialog.
- 3. Click the New button.
- 4. In the Edit Rule dialog, enter the CIX Conferencing nickname of the
- person in the From field.
- 5. Uncheck the 'Mark message for priority attention' box and check the
- 'Delete the message' box.
- 6. Click OK to save the new rule.
- 7. Click OK to close the Rules Manager dialog.
-
- Now when Ameol2 adds new messages to that conference, it will check to
- see if the author is the person quoted in the rule and, if so, delete
- the message. The message will not even be saved in your messagebase.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 5 ameol@cix.co.uk(423)1Jul99 08:00
- Creating New Rules Manually
-
- When you choose the Rules command from the Settings menu and click the New
- button to create a new rule, Ameol2 provides a great deal of flexibility in
- specifying the matching strings. The matching strings are what Ameol2 looks
- for in every new message checked against the rules you've set up.
-
- The following messages give some background about how to specify rules in
- the Edit Rule dialog box.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 6 ameol@cix.co.uk(483)1Jul99 08:00
- Rules Use the AND Logic
-
- There are input four fields in the match portion of Edit Rule dialog. If you
- enter a matching string into more than one of the fields, then Ameol2 expects
- a message to match ALL the fields before the rule is considered successful.
-
- Thus if you set up a rule as follows:
-
- From: test@example.cix.co.uk
- Subject: Ameol2
-
- Then it will only match if the message is from test@example.cix.co.uk AND the
- word Ameol2 appears in the Subject field.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 7 ameol@cix.co.uk(579)1Jul99 08:00
- Rules Are Not Case Sensitive
-
- It is important to realise that Ameol2 disregards case when matching a rule.
- So a rule set up to match Junk in the Subject field will match all of the
- following:
-
- This is a junk message
- Warning! Junk E-Mail!
- This is the JUNK MAILER list
-
- Also, Ameol2 does not restrict matching complete words. So if the matching
- string appears inside a word, it will match. The following subject fields
- will all match a rule that looks for the string '4020' in the Subject.
-
- HP i4020 printer problems
- Re: GPF in address 80040206A
-
- >>>Tutorials/Rules 8 ameol@cix.co.uk(1309)1Jul99 08:00
- How To Specify A Rule To or From A Person
-
- For the From and To field, you can specify either a username or a
- fully-qualified e-mail address. A username is the name to the LEFT of any
- '@' symbol in an e-mail address. The qualified address is a persons FULL
- e-mail address including their domain.
-
- Username: test
- Qualified Address: test@example.cix.co.uk
-
- If you specify a username only, then mail to that username from ANY domain will
- match. Given the above example, mail from or to any of the following will match
- a username of simon:
-
- test@example.cix.co.uk
- test@cix.co.uk
- test@another.domain.co.uk
- test@msn.com
-
- The following will NOT match:
-
- test_again@cix.co.uk
- my_test@msn.com
-
- If you specify a fully qualified address, then only mail from or to that address
- will match. In the examples given above, only mail from or to
- test@example.cix.co.uk will match.
-
- To match ANY user within a particular domain, specify the domain:
-
- @example.cix.co.uk
-
- If you specify this in the From or To field, then e-mail to or from any of the
- following will match the rule:
-
- test@example.cix.co.uk
- hurray@example.cix.co.uk
- i_am_a_duck@example.cix.co.uk
-
- >>>Tutorials/Usenet 1 ameol@cix.co.uk(653)1Jul99 08:00
- Joining a Usenet newsgroup
-
- To join a Usenet newsgroup, choose Subscribe from the News menu and in
- the Subscribe dialog, enter the name of the newsgroup.
-
- Ameol2 permits you to just download the headers of news articles or the
- entire article. Because Usenet news is a vast collection of usually quite
- long articles, downloading the entire articles can take a long time and
- make for an expensive download. So you have the option of only retrieving
- the headers which will give you basic information about the rest of the
- article. If you think an article is interesting, you can Tag it so that
- next time you connect, Ameol2 will retrieve the full article.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Usenet 2 ameol@cix.co.uk(471)1Jul99 08:00
- Resigning from a Usenet newsgroup
-
- To resign a Usenet newsgroup, choose the Unsubscribe command from the News
- menu. If the newsgroup was on the CIX Conferencing news server, Ameol2
- places a resign command in the Out Basket to instruct CIX Usenet to
- explicitly resign the newsgroup for you. If the newsgroup was from an
- internet news server then Ameol2 simply stops collecting articles from that
- newsgroup.
-
- You can rejoin a resigning newsgroup by resubscribing to it.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Usenet 3 ameol@cix.co.uk(542)1Jul99 08:00
- Tagging articles
-
- By default, Ameol2 only downloads the headers of Usenet articles unless
- you have explicitly asked it to download the full article. To obtain the
- full article given the header, you need to Tag it for collection. Choose
- the Tag command from the Message menu and the article will be marked as
- tagged.
-
- Not all tagged articles can be retrieved. Many news servers 'expire'
- articles after a period of time and expired articles cannot be retrieved.
- Ameol2 will tell you if an article could not be retrieved because it was
- expired.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Usenet 4 ameol@cix.co.uk(431)1Jul99 08:00
- Watching interesting threads
-
- Sometimes you might spot a message which you find interesting and you
- would like to retrieve the full articles for any comments to that
- message. Ameol2 allows you to 'watch' a thread so that the full article
- for any comments to a watched thread are automatically retrieved.
-
- To watch a thread, choose the Watch command from the Message menu. A
- little icon appears next to messages in watched threads.
-
- >>>Tutorials/Usenet 5 ameol@cix.co.uk(746)1Jul99 08:00
- Decoding attachments in binary newsgroups
-
- Ameol2 supports decoding of encoded attachments in messages posted to
- binary newsgroups. Both Uuencoding and Mime/base64 decoding are
- supported.
-
- If you come across a message which contains an attachment, choose Decode
- Binary Attachment from the Message menu and Ameol2 will create the
- decoded file in your Attach subdirectory. An icon representing the
- decoded file will also appear at the beginning of the message, replacing
- the encoded information. You can click the icon to open the attachment.
-
- Ameol2 always warns before you open attachments as there is the
- possibility that the attachment may be a rogue program or a virus. So
- take care and do NOT run any program that you do not know to be safe.
